독해력의 이상적인 목표가 직독직해에 있듯이 청해력의 이상적인 목표는 직청직해에 있다. 직청직해는 화자의 말을 들으면서 동시에 이해하는 것이다. 이는 모국어에서는 무의식적으로 이루어지는 인지작용이다. 그러나 우리에게 영어는 모국어도 공용어도 아니고, 제2언어도 아닌 외국어이다. 외국어는 학습의 대상일 뿐 일상생활에서 사용되지 않으며, 이 점이 영어교육과 학습의 가장 큰 장애요인 중 하나이다.
우리의 이러한 외국어로서의 영어 교육환경에서 그동안 학습자의 독해력을 직독직해의 수준으로 끌어올리는 데는 어느 정도 성공하였다. 이는 말할 것도 없이 읽기는 문자 매체를 대상으로 하기 때문이다. 필자는 우리나라의 듣기교육도 직청직해가 가능한 시대에 접어들었다고 감히 판단하였다. 그 근거는 두가지다. 첫째, Internet의 덕분으로 영어 모국어화자의 원음 자료를 아주 쉽게 접할 수 있고, 저장도 가능하여 이제 소리의 시간성을 뛰어넘어 문자매체의 장점인 공간화가 가능해졌기 때문이다. 둘째, 기존의 청취력 교육 및 학습 방법의 치명적인 허점을 극복하는 것이 충분히 가능하다는 것을 학문적으로나 경험적으로 확신하였기 때문이다. 한마디로 기존 청취력은 교육은 영어의 물리적 소리에 익숙해지도록 하는 교육이었다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 바꿔말하면 그것은 거의 대부분 청력교육이었지 청취력, 즉 청취 이해력의 진정한 영어교육이 아니었다고 감히 말할 수 있다. 이제 물리적 청력 교육에서 심리적 청취력 교육으로 전환해야 하고, 또 그렇게 할 수 있는 여건이 마련된 시점임을 확신한다.
